As a behavioral health coach for youth and young adults, I enjoy supporting individuals during this transitional time. As we know, life at these developmental stages is exciting, vibrant and full of limitless options, which can be somewhat overwhelming. My work with young adults is to consult them around the areas that they need support with and develop an action plan that they are guided/assisted in completing. My work includes academic support at the bachelor and graduate levels: IEP’s, resourcing and utilization of academic accommodations, basic tutoring, procurement of a tutor, organization of academic life/homework, and academic progress check-ups as desired. Additionally, I enjoy supporting the development of vocational skills and can help with resume building, job searches and applications. As part of the vocational process, coaching/modeling interviewing skills with clients is often helpful and aids in successful employment.
Other helpful support for this particular population, are skills in “adulting.” This includes a wide array of assistance such as: housing needs, bill payment, medical needs/insurance, organization of transportation & shopping needs (grocery, etc.), budgeting, and organization/prioritization of tasks in daily living. Medication support/liaison
Finally, there is another facet to coaching with young adults, which is the heart of my work. As I get to know each client, I get the privilege of witnessing the unfolding of natural strengths, skills, and resiliency that each possess. As a coach it is a joy to shine a light on these places and draw out personal growth among these emerging adults. This often looks like cherished moments in which a young adult sees possibility for the first time when they were convinced otherwise. It is seeing the self-pride when they get their first job or a passing grade in a college course. It’s also witnessing these individuals growing their passions and interests as they explore community and make new friends- not only with others, but most importantly, with themselves.
